This pattern originates from the gagaku piece "Seigaiha," danced by Hikaru Genji in the Tale of Genji. The pattern evokes the blessings of the vast ocean, and is an auspicious motif that embodies wishes for happiness that will continue forever like the endless waves, and a peaceful life like the gentle waves.

This design, derived from the mesh pattern of a basket, is believed to ward off evil spirits. In the Edo period, it was customary to hang baskets with many eyes on eaves, as it was believed that demons hate eyes. Sometimes we feel as if we are being swallowed up by bad circumstances, but in those times, it is hoped that the mesh pattern will protect us.
