This family crest is said to have originated when it was used as a sacred crest by Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, where Fujiwara no Michizane is enshrined. As Tenjin faith, which regards Michizane as a god, spread throughout Japan, the crest also spread to various places. The plum blossom is famous as the flower loved by Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning, and various plum family crests are used by Tenjin shrines all over the country.
